Ethan Fox was born with Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare skin condition that has left his skin so fragile, even a hug from his mother can cause painful blistering. But Ethan is a member of the the Sparrow Superstars, a T-ball team for child patients at Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital. So with the swing of a bat, 6-year-old Ethan doesn’t let his skin condition rob him of a childhood.
This video story was born through a lack of communication. A fellow reporter had already reported and written her story for a Sunday edition when my editor came to me suggesting we shoot some kind of video story. But there was a problem. The team had just finished their season, and while the reporter and a photographer had gone to one of their last games, we didn’t have any video. So I called the team’s coach to ask if there were any interesting stories to be told about a particular team member. She directed me to Ethan’s mom. So while I wasn’t able to show the team in action, I did find an interesting profile piece.
